S2-S/Normal Procedures

SECTION 4. NORMAL PROCEDURES

1 PREFLIGHT

A thorough pre-flight inspection is essential to the safe conduct of your flight. The following procedures are recommended:

Front

  1. Inspect bubble for cracks
  2. Inspect landing lights
  3. Inspect airspeed anemometer
  4. Inspect beacon and front nav lights
  5. Inspect right skids and struts

Right Side

  1. Inspect battery and electrical connections
  2. Inspect primary and auxiliary fuel pumps and fuel lines

2 STARTING

Use the following procedure for normal starts:

  1. Controls – neutral
  2. Collective – full down
  3. Throttle – idle
  4. Beacon – on
  5. Fuel Cutoff – on
  6. Rotor brake - off
  7. Switches (Bat., Gen., Fuel/Feed Pumps) – on
  8. Collective – raise slightly, then lower (verify low rpm horn sounds)
  9. Volts – verify > 9 volts
  10. Water level – Verify 100%
  11. Vent valve - Open
  12. Ignitor – on
  13. Fuel Flow – 5%
  14. Boiler fire – verify
  15. Fuel Flow - Full
  16. Boiler Temp. – monitor

At 212F Boiler Temp.

  1. Vent valve – verify steam present
  2. Wait – 1 min.
  3. Vent valve - close
  4. Boiler Press. - Monitor

At 200 psi Boiler Press.

  1. Throttle – 5%
  2. Amps – Verify not negative
  3. Boiler Press. - Monitor

At 300 psi Boiler Press.

  1. Fuel Flow – apprx. 25%
  2. Throttle – Increase to 2000 RPM
  3. Governor – on
  4. RPM – verify between 2700 and 2900

3 TAKE OFF

4 CRUISE

5 PRE-LANDING

6 AFTER LANDING

7 SHUT DOWN

Use the following procedure to shut down the engine:

  1. Controls – neutral
  2. Collective – full down
  3. Governor – off
  4. Throttle – decrease to 2000 RPM
  5. Fuel Flow – cutoff
  6. Ignitor – off
  7. Rotor brake – on (when below 200 RPM)
  8. Switches (Bat., Gen., Fuel/Feed Pumps) – off
