SECTION 6. NORMAL PROCEDURES

1 General

This section describes the procedures necessary to safely and efficiently operate your aircraft. A basic understanding of helicopter flight techniques is assumed.

3 Normal Start-Up

3.1 Prestart

  1. Rotor Brake – ON
  2. Anti-collision lights – AS REQUIRED
  3. Cabin lights – AS REQUIRED
  4. All Light Rheostats - AS REQUIRED
  5. Cabin Heater Switch - OFF
  6. Fan Switch - OFF
  7. Pitot Heater Switch - OFF
  8. Windshield Wiper Rotary Switch - OFF
  9. Crew Alarm Bell - TEST
  10. Hoist Master Switch - OFF
  11. Radio Master Switch - RADIO MASTER
  12. Circuit Breakers - IN
  13. Stick Trim Switch – ON
  14. Fuel Shutoff Valve - Open
  15. Mixture Control Lever - IDLE CUT-OFF
  16. Carburetor Air Lever - DIRECT
  17. Clutch Pump Switch - OFF
  18. Servo Switch – ON
  19. Parking Brake Handle - RESET
  20. Tail Wheel - LOCKED
  21. Radios, Radar Altimeter, IFF - OFF
  22. Ignition Switch - OFF
  23. Fuel Booster Pump Switch - OFF
  24. External Power - ON (voltage checked)
  25. Battery-Generator Switch - BATT ONLY (voltage checked)
    Note: When starting without external power, the battery-generator switch must be in the BATT ONLY position to energize the starter relay and engine primer which are connected to the secondary bus.

3.2 Starting Engine

  1. Starter Button – DEPRESS
  2. Ignition Switch – BOTH (after engine has cranked for approximately 5 sec.)
  3. Primer Button – DEPRESS
    NOTE: If engine fails to start after 30 seconds, allow the starter to cool and then repeat starting procedure
  4. Mixture Control Lever – RICH
  5. Engine – Verify running smoothly
    NOTE: Do not allow the engine to exceed 1400 RPM on starting.
    CAUTION: To prevent possible engine damage, if oil pressure does not register within 10 sec. or reach 40psi within 20 sec., stop engine and investigate.
  6. Starter and Primer – OFF
  7. Idle Engine at 1000 +- 100 rpm until oil pressure has stabilized
  8. Aux. Hyd. Press. - 1300 to 1600 psi

3.3 Post-Start

  1. Oil Pressure – CHECK
  2. Ignition Switch – CHECK
    Idle engine at 1000 +- 100 rpm. Turn switch OFF momentarily to see if engine stops firing. Return switch to BOTH.
  3. Throttle – 1400 RPM
    as soon as engine runs smoothly on RICH MIXTURE and oil pressure has stabilized.
  4. Flight Control Servo – AUX OFF
    1. Check that auxiliary servo hydraulic pressure remains constant.
    2. Check controls for free and easy movement.
      NOTE: The auxiliary servo hydraulic system should not shut off when the switch is placed in the AUX OFF position, as there is no pressure in the primary servo hydraulic system until after clutch engagement.
  5. Flight Control Switch – ON
  6. Carburetor Air Lever – DIRECT
  7. Fuel Gage Test Switch – TEST
  8. Fuel Quantity Selector – CHECK ALL
    Rotate through the four positions, TOT, FWD, CTR, AFT, to check fuel quantity in each tank. Leave switch at FWD position.
  9. Engine temp. and press. – CHECK

3.4 Engage

  1. Oil Temp – >40C
  2. Rotor Brake Lever - OFF
  3. Rotor Brake Warning Light – OFF
  4. Collective Pitch Stick – MINIMUM PITCH
  5. Cyclic Control Stick – CENTERED
  6. Tail Rotor Control Pedals – CENTERED
  7. Throttle – 1700 Engine RPM
  8. Clutch Switch – CLUTCH
    Verify clutch switch warning light - ON
  9. Throttle – Increase to 2000 to 2400 engine rpm to produce 1525 apparent rotor rpm
  10. Apparent Rotor Speed – 1525 RPM
  11. Engine – cut quickly to below rotor speed, then increase to match needles
    Note: Do not let apparent rotor RPM fall below 1200 RPM or mechanical coupling will not engage.
    Note: As throttle is increased, the rotor and engine tachometer needles should line up, indicating that the clutch mechanical coupling has engaged.
  12. Clutch Switch – OFF
  13. Clutch Warning Light – Verify OFF
  14. Trans. Temp. and Press – CHECK
  15. Engine – 2000 RPM
  16. Pri. Hyd. Press. - 1300 to 1600psi

3.5 Post-Engage

  1. Battery-Generator Switch - BATT & GEN
  2. External Power – OFF
  3. Radios, Radar Altimeter, IFF – ON
  4. Instrument Power Switch – No 2 INV
  5. INST PWR FAIL light – Verify OFF
  6. Instrument Power Switch – No 1 INV
  7. Flight Instruments - Check
  8. Engine Driven Fuel Pump Check
    1. Fuel Booster Pump Switch – OFF
      NOTE: A drop of approximately 10 amps should result indicating that the fuel booster pump is shut off. Engine should remain running on engine driven pump.
    2. Fuel Pressure Gage - 22 1/2 to 23 1/2 psi
    3. Fuel Booster Pump Switch – ON
  9. Warning Lights – OFF
  10. Hydraulic Hoist – CHECK
  11. Hoist Master Switch – PILOT
  12. Hoist Switch – DN, OFF, UP
  13. Hoist Master Switch OFF
  14. Servo Checks
    1. Flight Control Servo - PRI OFF
    2. Pri. Hyd. Press – Verify 0 psi
    3. Flight Control Servo – ON
    4. Pri. Hyd. Press – Verify normal psi
    5. Flight Control Servo - AUX OFF
    6. Aux. Hyd. Press – Verify 0 psi
    7. Flight Control Servo – ON
    8. Aux. Hyd. Press – Verify normal psi
  15. Mixture Check
    1. Mixture Control Lever – NORMAL
    2. Engine – Verify normal operation
    3. Mixture Control Lever - RICH
  16. Ignition System Check
    1. Engine – 2200 RPM
    2. Ignition – R then L (max drop 75 RPM)
    3. Ignition – BOTH
  17. Freewheeling Unit Check
    1. Engine – 2000 RPM
    2. Cut throttle rapidly – verify RPM split
    3. Engine – 2000 RPM

4 Pre-Taxi Check

  1. Altimeter - SET
  2. Chocks – REMOVED
  3. Surrounding Area – CLEAR
  4. Parking Brake – OFF
  5. Tail Wheel Lock – AS REQUIRED

5 Takeoff and Climb

5.1 Takeoff

  1. Rotor Brake – OFF
  2. Fuel – ON
  3. Mixture – RICH
  4. Brake – OFF
  5. Tail Wheel Lock – AS REQUIRED
  6. Fuel Pump – ON
  7. Carb Air – AS REQUIRED

5.2 Climb

  1. Mixture – RICH

6 Cruise

Cruise power settings should be as listed below:

7 Pre-Landings

  5. Fuel Booster Pump Switch - ON
  6. Cabin Heater – OFF
    Note: Heater is turned off on final landing to allow heater to cool.
  7. Engine Speed – 2500 RPM
  8. Approach Speed – 60 knots

8 Shutdown

  1. Tail Wheel Lock Handle - LOCKED
  2. Parking Brake Handle – LOCKED
  3. Radio, Radar Altimeter, IFF – OFF
  4. Fuel Booster Pump Switch – OFF
  5. Throttle – 1700 RPM
  6. Clutch – Disengaged Note: clutch will disengage automatically as rotor rpm decreases
  7. Battery-Generator Switch - BATT ONLY
  8. Rotor Brake - ON when rotor rpm drops below engine rpm
  9. Ignition Ground Check - Idle engine at 1000 +- 100 rpm. Turn switch OFF momentarily to see if engine stops firing. Return switch to BOTH.
  10. Idle Mixture Check - 1400 RPM Flick the primer button and note any change in manifold pressure and rpm.
  11. If a cold weather start is anticipated, refer to OIL DILUTION section in the manual
  12. Engine - If the engine is warm, idle the engine at 1000 +- 100 RPM until the cylinder head temperature drops to a maximum of 150c (302f) The engine should be idled for at least 1 minute.
  13. Mixture Control Lever - IDLE CUT OFF
  14. Ignition Switch - OFF after engine stops
  15. Fuel Shut Off Valve Switch - OFF
  16. All Exterior and Interior Light Switches - OFF
  17. Battery-Generator Switch - OFF
