SECTION 4. NORMAL PROCEDURES

1 PREFLIGHT

A thorough pre-flight inspection is essential to the safe conduct of your flight. The following procedures are recommended:

Front

  1. Inspect bubble for cracks
  2. Inspect landing lights

Right Side

  1. Inspect right door for security
  2. Inspect beacon and front nav lights
  3. Inspect right skids and struts
  4. Verify door secure
  5. Inspect battery and electrical connections
  6. Inspect primary and auxiliary fuel pumps and fuel lines
  7. Inspect main drive shaft, belts, fans and condenser
  8. Inspect vertical drive shaft, centrifugal clutch and sprag clutch
  9. Inspect steam turbine for integrity
  10. Inspect boiler for cracks or damage
  11. Open boiler door, inspect burner, close door
  12. Open drain valve, verify water flow, close valve
  13. Inspect whistle
  14. Verify steam vent closed
  15. Inspect tail rotor drive shaft

Tail Rotor

  1. Inspect horizontal stabilizer for security
  2. Inspect tail rotor for security
  3. Inspect tail rotor hub and pitch-change links
  4. Inspect tail position light for security

Left Side

  1. Verify smoke box clear of obstructions
  2. Inspect feed pump for security and condition
  3. Inspect throttle and whistle control cables
  4. Verify water level 75% or higher
  5. Verify fuel level sufficient for flight.
  6. Verify fuel color is clear or amber
  7. Inspect left skids
  8. Inspect airspeed anemometer
  9. Inspect left door for security

2 STARTING

Use the following procedure for normal starts:

  1. Controls – neutral
  2. Collective – full down
  3. Throttle – idle
  4. Beacon – on
  5. Fuel Cutoff – on
  6. Rotor brake - off
  7. Switches (Bat., Gen., Fuel/Feed Pumps) – on
  8. Collective – raise slightly, then lower (verify low rpm horn sounds)
  9. Volts – verify > 9 volts
  10. Water level – Verify 100%
  11. Vent valve - open
  12. Ignitor – on
  13. Fuel Flow – 5%
  14. Boiler fire – verify
  15. Fuel Flow - full
  16. Boiler Temp. – monitor

At 212F Boiler Temp.

  1. Vent valve – verify steam present
  2. Wait – 1 min.
  3. Vent valve - close
  4. Boiler Press. - monitor

At 200 psi Boiler Press.

  1. Throttle – 5%
  2. Amps – verify not negative
  3. Boiler Press. - monitor

At 300 psi Boiler Press.

  1. Fuel Flow – apprx. 25%
  2. Throttle – increase to 2000 RPM
  3. Governor – on
  4. Throttle - increase to 2400 RPM
  5. Governor - verify active
  6. RPM – verify between 2700 and 2900
  7. Fuel Flow - adjust to center boiler press. diff.

3 TAKE OFF TO HOVER

Use the following procedure for normal take offs from the ground

  1. Collective - full down
  2. Cyclic - center
  3. Pedals - slight left for torque
  4. Fuel Flow - apprx. 50%
  5. Collective - raise until aircraft becomes light
  6. Pedals - adjust for direction control
  7. Cyclic - adjust for position
  8. Fuel Flow - adjust as necessary

4 APPROACH TO LANDING

Use the following procedure in an approach to landing:

  1. Collective - Lower to establish descent
  2. Fuel Flow - Adjust to maintain 350 psi

5 AFTER LANDING

Use the following procedure after landing:

  1. Collective - full down
  2. Cyclic - center
  3. Pedals - center
  4. Fuel Flow - Adjust to maintain 350 psi

6 SHUT DOWN

Use the following procedure to shut down the engine:

  1. Controls – neutral
  2. Collective – full down
  3. Governor – off
  4. Throttle – decrease to 2000 RPM
  5. Fuel Flow – cutoff
  6. Ignitor – off
  7. Rotor brake – on (when below 200 RPM)
  8. Switches (Bat., Gen., Fuel/Feed Pumps) – off
