SECTION 8. EMERGENCY PROCEDURES
1 General
This section describes the most common helicopter emergencies that may be encountered in the Chinook, and the appropriate actions to address those emergencies.
2 Definitions
The following terms apply for this section:
- The term LAND AS SOON AS POSSIBLE is defined as a landing to the nearest suitable landing surface. Survival of the occupants is considered the highst priority.
- The term LAND AS SOON AS PRACTICABLE means land at the nearest suitable airfield or heliport.
- The term AUTOROTATE means adjusting the controls to establish an autorotation and landing. This generally means thurst control full down, then adjust as necessary to maintain 100% rotor RPM.
3 Emergency Warning Signals
This helicopter is equipped with a troop alarm and jump light system. The following standard signals can be used to notify occupants:
- Prepare for ditching or crash landing - 3 short rings
- Water contact - Sustained ring
4 Emergency Checklists
4.1 Dual Engine Failure
Indications:
- ENG 1 FAIL and ENG 2 FAIL caution lights
- N1 and N2 underspeed
- Engine flameout
Procedure:
- AUTOROTATE
- External cargo - Jettison
4.2 Engine Fire
Indications:
- FIRE PULL handle light LIT
- ENG 1 FAIL or ENG 2 FAIL caution lights
- N1 underspeed
- Engine flameout
Procedure:
- Identify affected engine. Use caution not to shut down operating engine.
- External cargo - Jettison
- FIRE PULL handle - PULL
- Affected Engine - Engine Control Lever to STOP
- AGENT DISCH - BLT 1
- Monitor.
- If fire is not out: AGENT DISCH - BTL 2
- Land as soon as possible
4.3 Engine Chip Light(s)
Indications:
- ENG 1 CHIP DETR or ENG 2 CHIP DETR caution lights
Procedure (One Engine Affected):
- External cargo - Jettison
- Affected Engine - Engine Control Lever to STOP
- Land as soon as practicable
Procedure (Both Engines Affected):
- External cargo - Jettison
- Land as soon as possible
4.4 Engine or Transmission Warnings
Indications:
- Any of ENG 1/2 OIL LVL, ENG 1/2 XMSN HOT, XMSN OIL HOT, XMSN OIL PRESS, XMSN AUX OIL PRESS
Procedure:

- Check fuel levels
- If no aux fuel, or insufficient fuel in main tank, land as soon as practicable
4.6 FADEC Failures
Indications:
- FADEC 1 or FADEC 2 caution lights
Procedure:
- GEN switch - OFF, then ON
If caution light remains lit:
- GEN switch - OFF
- Land as soon as practicable
4.7 Generator Failures
Indications:
- NO 1 GEN and/or NO 1 GEN cautions
Procedure (single GEN failure):
- GEN switch - OFF, then ON
If caution light remains lit:
- GEN switch - OFF
- Land as soon as practicable
Procedure (double GEN failure):
- AFCS SYSTEM SEL - OFF
- PDP gang bars - DOWN
- Each GEN switch - OFF then ON to reset
If power is restored
- PDP gang bars - UP
- Land as soon as practicable
If power is not restored
- APU - Start
- APU GEN - ON
- Land as soon as possible
