- Inspect vertical drive shaft, centrifugal clutch and sprag clutch
- Inspect steam turbine for integrity
- Inspect boiler for cracks or damage
- Open boiler door, inspect burner, close door
- Open drain valve, verify water flow, close valve
- Inspect whistle
- Verify steam vent closed
- Inspect tail rotor drive shaft
Tail Rotor
- Inspect horizontal stabilizer for security
- Inspect tail rotor for security
- Inspect tail rotor hub and pitch-change links
- Inspect tail position light for security
Left Side
- Verify smoke box clear of obstructions
- Inspect feed pump for security and condition
- Inspect throttle and whistle control cables
- Verify water level 75% or higher
- Verify fuel level sufficient for flight.
- Verify fuel color is clear or amber
- Inspect left skids
- Inspect airspeed anemometer
- Inspect left door for security
2 STARTING
Use the following procedure for normal starts:
- Controls – neutral
- Collective – full down
- Throttle – idle
- Beacon – on
- Fuel Cutoff – on
- Rotor brake - off
- Switches (Bat., Gen., Fuel/Feed Pumps) – on
- Collective – raise slightly, then lower (verify low rpm horn sounds)
- Volts – verify > 9 volts
- Water level – Verify 100%
- Vent valve - open
- Ignitor – on
- Fuel Flow – 5%
- Boiler fire – verify
- Fuel Flow - full
- Boiler Temp. – monitor
At 212F Boiler Temp.
- Vent valve – verify steam present
- Wait – 1 min.
- Vent valve - close
- Boiler Press. - monitor
At 200 psi Boiler Press.
- Throttle – 5%
- Amps – verify not negative
- Boiler Press. - monitor
At 300 psi Boiler Press.
- Fuel Flow – apprx. 25%
- Throttle – increase to 2000 RPM
- Governor – on
- Throttle - increase to 2400 RPM
- Governor - verify active
- RPM – verify between 2700 and 2900
- Fuel Flow - adjust to center boiler press. diff.
3 TAKE OFF TO HOVER
Use the following procedure for normal take offs from the ground
- Collective - full down
- Cyclic - center
- Pedals - slight left for torque
- Fuel Flow - apprx. 50%
- Collective - raise until aircraft becomes light
- Pedals - adjust for direction control
- Cyclic - adjust for position
- Fuel Flow - adjust as necessary
4 APPROACH TO LANDING
Use the following procedure in an approach to landing:
- Collective - Lower to establish descent
- Fuel Flow - Adjust to maintain 350 psi
5 AFTER LANDING
Use the following procedure after landing:
- Collective - full down
- Cyclic - center
- Pedals - center
- Fuel Flow - Adjust to maintain 350 psi
6 SHUT DOWN
Use the following procedure to shut down the engine:
- Controls – neutral
- Collective – full down
- Governor – off
- Throttle – decrease to 2000 RPM
- Fuel Flow – cutoff
- Ignitor – off
- Rotor brake – on (when below 200 RPM)
- Switches (Bat., Gen., Fuel/Feed Pumps) – off
