1 General

This section describes the most common helicopter emergencies that may be encountered in the Chinook, and the appropriate actions to address those emergencies.

2 Definitions

The following terms apply for this section:

  • The term LAND AS SOON AS POSSIBLE is defined as a landing to the nearest suitable landing surface. Survival of the occupants is considered the highst priority.
  • The term LAND AS SOON AS PRACTICABLE means land at the nearest suitable airfield or heliport.
  • The term AUTOROTATE means adjusting the controls to establish an autorotation and landing. This generally means thurst control full down, then adjust as necessary to maintain 100% rotor RPM.


3 Emergency Warning Signals

This helicopter is equipped with a troop alarm and jump light system. The following standard signals can be used to notify occupants:

  • Prepare for ditching or crash landing - 3 short rings
  • Water contact - Sustained ring

4 Emergency Checklists

4.1 Dual Engine Failure

Indications:

  • ENG 1 FAIL and ENG 2 FAIL caution lights
  • N1 and N2 underspeed
  • Engine flameout

Procedure:

  1. AUTOROTATE
  2. External cargo - Jettison

4.2 Engine Fire

Indications:

  • FIRE PULL handle light LIT
  • ENG 1 FAIL or ENG 2 FAIL caution lights
  • N1 underspeed
  • Engine flameout

Procedure:

  1. Identify affected engine. Use caution not to shut down operating engine.
  2. External cargo - Jettison
  3. FIRE PULL handle - PULL
  4. Affected Engine - Engine Control Lever to STOP
  5. AGENT DISCH - BLT 1
  6. Monitor.
  7. If fire is not out: AGENT DISCH - BTL 2
  8. Land as soon as possible

4.3 Engine Chip Light(s)

Indications:

  • ENG 1 CHIP DETR or ENG 2 CHIP DETR caution lights

Procedure (One Engine Affected):

  1. External cargo - Jettison
  2. Affected Engine - Engine Control Lever to STOP
  3. Land as soon as practicable

Procedure (Both Engines Affected):

  1. External cargo - Jettison
  2. Land as soon as possible
